A Gift of Love for our Needy World

How wonderful it is
that nobody has to wait
a single moment before
starting to improve the world.

--Anne Frank

If you are overwhelmed by the thought of upcoming holiday events and what to give all of those people you love and care about, those who have everything they need and are hard if not impossible to buy for, here is a wonderful idea to consider:

How about a gift of hope and new life? . . . . . . . Intrigued?

Log onto the website Alternative Gifts International and take a look at all the possibilities . . .

The global mission of AGI is to send authentic, life-giving gifts to a needy world--gifts that build a partnership with people in crisis and that protect and preserve the earth's endangered environment--to nourish and sustain a more equitable and peaceful global community.

AGI lets you select holiday presents in the names of your loved ones from among 38 worldwide projects. For example, in Kenya, your gift of $28 will be used to help street children, many of whom have been orphaned by AIDS and need a safe place to sleep, as well a week’s worth of food, and some basic care and adult attention.

In China, you can give the gift of medical care to a leper who has been ostracized because of his circumstances and left to live an isolated and lonely existence. Life-enhancing surgery can be given to such a person for $28.

In Malawi, you can help plant acacia trees which will broadly impact food security for hundreds of families. Five tree seedlings can be your gift for $28. All very affordable and gratifying in their potential impact.

According to the Alternative Gifts website, for the cost of a hair cut, you can buy a children’s book to be shared by hundreds of kids in Mexico. For the cost of a CD player, you can provide one day of hospital care to a sick patient in Egypt. For the cost of an iPod video, you can provide education for one child for a year. And the list goes on and on!

This has been a wonderful year of remarkable changes – let’s keep spreading the many blessings we have here in Peachtree Corners with our fellow citizens of the world!

Reading this made me think of another organization that we have used many times in the past: Heifer International. They are a wonderful organization that not gives something (a flock of chickens, a cow, etc) to a needy family but then they teach the recipient how to care for the animal and how to use it to support the family. The best part is that the family agrees in exchange for the training and the animal that they will give the first female offspring the animal to another family in the village, as a pay-it-forward . So your donation becomes multiplied through the years as more and more families benefit. www.heifer.org
It is based on the saying: Give a man a fish, he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, he will eat for a lifetime.
Just thought you might be interested.
Thanks for all you do.

We have used Heifer for gifts too. I was team mom for my kid's softball team and instead of giving the coaches a gift certificate, I convinced the team to give Heifer gifts in their names. We gave families bees, chicks, and rabbits. The girls loved the idea of giving animals, and I took the opportunity to explain the concept. The coaches both thanked me for it....
